![]() ![]() The tracks are super varied, and there’s even a means of getting more from an integrated addon store. The characters are all based on mascots of open source software, so the namesake Tux is there, along with Hexley (of BSD), Mozilla, Pidgin, the gimp mascot (who apparently has a name)… I believe there are even different types of karts to unlock. And there are boxes that you can collect for various powerups or ways of slowing down your opponents. It’s cartoonish, so don’t expect to find any realistic physics. But there are some who really like a platform scroller, and while it’s no original Mario this does fit the bill. I don’t know, just something to break up the endless snow.Ĭonclusion: The music can be repetitive and the gameplay frustrating and unvaried. It might be a little more interesting if there were some forest levels, or water levels, or cloud levels. Also there are no supporting characters through the first few levels, and all the levels seem to have the same feel. ![]() It makes it feel like you’re not making progress towards saving the damsel in distress. That said I kind of miss some sort of boss characters, and miss variety between levels. There’s enough variety of enemies to keep things interesting, yet not so many that you don’t know how to deal with the thing you’re seeing. They all also follow their own sort of physics, there are enemies which explode after being jumped on, and those that slide around possibly killing other enemies in their path. There is a variety of different types of enemies, some of which can be dealt with by jumping on their heads, some of which are better avoided or fireballed. That said the one time I really got stuck I eventually got past the point after being sent back to my checkpoint a few times and finally to the beginning of the level because when I arrived at the same point starting from the beginning I had the firemans hat (fireballs) which makes everything easier. They have checkpoints to help with that, but it might be just a little too difficult for some, requiring some precise timing of jumps. Gameplay: It can be super frustrating when you get stuck in one place. Here (at least for the first few levels), the levels seem to be pretty formulaic. I mean it was cool when mario 64 came out and we had 3d graphics and pretty worlds to look at. This is another example of a game that isn’t principally judged on its graphics. Graphics: I had a little difficulty setting resolution initially (then again I am intentionally using the development version). Sound effects for different actions like collecting coins or blowing fireballs are totally fine. The samples seem to loop pretty quickly, which grates after a little bit. Music & Sound: It’s an interesting disco soundtrack in places. ![]() In a slight twist we’re in Antartica (because we’re a penguin). You know the story, the girl gets kidnapped in the intro screen, then it’s your job to adventure and save the day. For some reason the side scroller on there was a penguin. For me personally it brought back some memories of playing games on a ti computer. Intro: Supertux is a platform sidescoller in the genre of Super Mario. ![]()
